How You Will Land The Perfect Job
Career Toolbox - Job Preparation
Landing, Keeping and Moving up in your Career
Hundreds of articles have been written about how to land the perfect job, how to keep that job and also how to move up in your career. This article is one of them. Yet, instead of being a 'how to', it will be a WILL do.
So, what WILL you do?
1. Network, network, network!
2. Connect others!
3. Be persistent!
4. Know yourself!
5. Be Proactive!
Five easy steps are listed above but the question is – will you do them?
I am going to give several reasons for why these are the right steps to either landing, keeping or moving up in your career to ensure that you WILL do them.
Network, network, network
The power of networking is prevalent but do you really practice it in the right way? It is crucial that you target the people, have a purpose and specific intentions. You want to build strategic relastionshipss – don't just show up at a networking event and have the 'see what happens' attitude. You need to go with an end goal in mind! The job or business deal of your dreams may be there and if you don't look close enough, you may not see it.
Connect others
Connecting others is just as important as connecting TO others. Think of it as paying it forward or doing something good, I can assure you that it will come back around. By propelling other peoples careers forward, you inturn propel yours and increase your chances of keeping your job or getting the job in the first place.
Be persistent
This leads us to being persistent. It is another one of those buzz words that we hear all the time – and again, I ask, do you practice it? Being persistent is the final step to closing a deal, getting a raise and/or promotion or even getting the job initially. Your life is ALWAYS in your hands and it is up to you to yell, scream or email hundreds of times for what you want. Learn how to take rejection but don't take no for an answer.
Know yourself
If you ask someone what they are really bad at, they will have an answer. Similarly, most people can come up with a few strengths. Whilst this is crucial, you ALSO need to be flexible. You need to be able to adapt to any and all situations. The only way to do this is to KNOW yourself – this gives you the ability to reinvent yourself and be who you need to be in order to get what you want. I am not asking you to wear a mask or be something you are not....I am asking you to STRETCH yourself.
Be Proactive
We live in a world where we REACT to things. We often don't specuate about what is to come, which means we are left in the position of perpetual reaction. Being proactive means knowing what the next interview question will be or what your boss is going to tell you to do next. People can always smell a reactor, so be proactive and get things done even before someone asks.
So, I will ask again – what will you do?
One of the best ways of holding yourself accountable and developing yourself into a persistent, proactive, flexible networker and connector is to hire a coach.
