We launched Striding Out in the Community by partnering up with the Urban Academy to work with a group of young people who had a desire to set up a social enterprise in their local community. The Urban Academy Girls - Lenole, Nadine and Siona had access to group coaching circles every fortnight over 6mths to help them progress their business idea.

“The sessions have helped us to increase our confidence and knowledge for planning the business. In particular our knowledge of  developing a strategy, financial planning, market research, marketing and management were definitely improved. As a result we have had the motivation to make relevant contacts and connections, and accessed other useful resources and support. We have gone on to secure a £5k loan from the Princes Trust.”

MBG FunHouse is a pioneering new initiative designed by three single mums to create and strengthen social bonds within a deprived community.  Fed up and frustrated with the lack of free, family facilities in their local area and with nowhere safe to go to spend quality time engaging with their children, three enterprising young mothers from South London have taken matters into their own hands.

The MBG Funhouse will provide bonding activities for both carer and child, such as; sports, arts, cake decoration, homework club, mediation, and counselling with the aim of alleviating parental isolation and lack of confidence within the community by building bonds between carer and child. Having grown up seeing their peers turn to crime or drugs in order to survive the harsh realities of life on South London estates; these young women are determined to set a new precedent.

Founding member Siona Blackford [24] who has a six year old daughter, is very excited about the project launch

“There is nothing like MBG Funhouse right now; MBG Funhouse is going to be wanted in every borough. It will be the only free facility where activities are tailored to engage both parent and child within a supportive environment”

With support from Kids Company, a grant from the Princes Trust, mentoring and encouragement from TV personality David McQueen & Striding Out, the MBG FunHouse will be open Saturdays at the Arches II drop-in centre, 1 Kenbury Street, London  SE5 9BS 12-4pm.
