Tips for Effective Networking

Be Curious, Be Kind, and Be Focussed

Be Curious

Walking into a room of new people can be a little daunting so where do you start?

  •  Find the person that seems most available for conversation.
  • Be curious about others and ask what they do.
  • Ask them what they most enjoy about what they do?
  • Listen for the aspect they are most excited about and ask further questions?

Making someone feel good about their achievements will help to build rapport.

Be Kind

See if you can be helpful in anyway

  • Ask them what they are looking to get out of today?
  • Who would they like to meet or what would they like to learn?
  • Introduce them to someone new if you able to.

This will help to develop trust to encourage two-way exchange of information

Be Focussed

Be focussed on what you need to get out of the event whilst also being open to conversations and exploring opportunities.

  • Have you elevator pitch ready for different audiences, so you can tell the person what you do and it will make sense to them.
  • Share your thoughts on why you are attending the event?
  • If relevant, explore ways of working with people.
  • Ask the network leader or a guest, if you looking to meet someone in particular e.g an accountant or online marketeer?

By the time you have left the event, hopefully you may have achieved your original goals as well as lots of new ones.
