Andre Le Gouais: A Quarterlife Career Crisis Survivor

I was working in corporate fundraising for a charity, when I realised as silly as it sounds, that I really didn't like the corporate side of what I was doing. The thought that I had to do the same thing, for at least the next ten , twenty or however many years filled me with dread, but I had worked hard to get to where I was so felt stuck.

What you did to survive the quarterlife crisis?

I am very happy to say that I discarded any doubts and came to coaching with Figuring Out !  I took the decision to take a risk and leave the job without any other role to go to. I started to earn money doing odd gardening jobs here and there, which led to a 13 week trial with a gardening Company in Essex.  In the meantime I also undertook a PTTLS course (Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Sector) and looked for a gardening evening course.

What happened as a result of coaching?

There were many things, most important I suppose was the fact that I  could take risks, explore and potentially fail at something, it didn't matter  when looking for the right role. It also helped to clarify exactly what my most important personal values were and how I can apply these to searching for a role.  From this I could see i needed to move towards something much more informal, outside and where results of your efforts were much more visible.

Where you are now?

I am now working for a Garden Services company having been kept on after a 13 week trial, as well as carrying out my own private work at weekends. I am also currently undertaking the Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 course.

Your hope for the future?

I hope to expand my private clients over the next 18 months in order to set up on my own. I have a business idea, that with the RHS qualification behind me, I would like to explore, which will hopefully help to find these clients a lot easier.
